For some of us, the financial crisis isn’t over. While the signs of recovery are being mentioned in the news, a lot of us have yet to feel its effects. In cases such as this, certain belt tightening measures may be undertaken to keep us liquid or with some form of available cash ready at hand. There are certain expenses that are necessary like food and utilities but all others may take a back seat. Here are some tips that can help you save money when additional and uncounted expenses do happen, especially when it comes to household repair:

Learn how to repair things. The internet is a great resource in finding manuals and how to do things yourself. There are even website blogs that are specific to different types of repairs in the house. Except in electrical services, lest you are an engineering graduate and can read a schematic, most household items that need to be fixed can be done on your own. There may be free or discounted courses on general home repair at your community college or area. Go and check if you can take one. This may lead to having a second job or a sideline for you as well. After all, repair men get paid well, most especially plumbers and electricians. Who says they can have all the fun. Learning enough to repair most general problems in the house may end up as another career option for you. Most handyman repair items in the house can be fixed within ten minutes provided that all the necessary things needed are within reach. Replacement parts can be second hand or discounted.

You don’t have to get brand new or branded items for certain things. Getting discounted door knobs is an ideal investment especially if you have a tight budget. Perhaps get a generic door knob with simple mechanisms. If it isn’t important and necessary, get a discounted door knob without any lock. The key to getting which door knob depends on where the door knob is located. If the knob is for your front door, then make sure that it is double locked but not necessarily branded and brass. You can save up to 60 % on discounted door knobs as compared to the standard retail price. Maintenance is king. If you have properly maintained your place, then there will be less need for repairs.

Keeping the place clean is the first step. By making sure that everything is in order and stuff has been segregated not only makes the place clean but it also provides as a deterrent for pests such as mice and rats. More so if you have a family that having the place rodent free is the most important thing as house mice and rats can carry diseases that are dangerous to humans. The bubonic plagued which struck Europe in the middle centuries came from mice and rat droppings combined with poor sanitation practices. If you keep your place clean, in the end you save money by limiting the number of replacements and repairs for your home.
